I came within literally an inch of dying from an act of supreme stupidity when I was 17. I mercifully never told my parents.

At 25 I hitchhiked from Florida to Oregon and back on a budget of $100. This time I told my parents, but not until I got back.

Knowing what I do about young men….

I never had any.

Interesting research. I appreciate you pointing out that each family's situation is different. I also wonder if lifespan is worse for mothers of boys because of the increased risk of violence and death associated with reckless behavior, gun violence, or even loss of sons in the military. And although daughters may often have a more conflictual relationship with their mothers, there is also greater emotional distance with sons, who push for greater independence. And as you mentioned, daughters are often more involved with their aging parents.
