What a great interview! I listened to it as a podcast--I always love listening to people's voices for interviews. I'm so happy to see you spreading awareness on the way that misogynistic myths melt their way into scientific "fact."

This is such an excellent discussion of the issue of “mom-brain.” That term is NOT derogatory, but it describes the process of becoming a mother, and it IS a process. I love the way you describe the combination of hormones AND experience. That captures the challenge nicely. As you say here, matrescence is a crucial life transition or developmental stage. An old professor of mine repeatedly said that “motherbaby” should be one word, so that it reflected the connection between the two that is such an important part of the process. Thanks for this fabulous discussion. Susan Landers, MD

Thank you Susan! A describing it as a process is exactly right! I am so glad you liked the interview. Please share to get the word out! I have recently been think about how to share some of my resources more widely with the medical community.

This was such a nice podcast! I think you both had a lot of wisdom to share about parenting, and I thought the debunking of parenting myths and especially the idea of "mom brain" was absolutely needed! I didn't even know a lot of mothers took offense to that term; I feel like I've gained some new perspective. I also find it wonderful how Chelsea talks about the idea of motherhood being a process and how it is not only the parent who meets the baby's needs, but the existence of the baby meeting the mother's needs to develop that maternal "instinct." It really is a two-way street! Much love to all the *efficient* mothers and caregivers out there! Hopefully one day, we can provide more support for them as Chelsea suggested and even get more people involved in the caregiving process if needed, like how we did in the past.

Danna, Thank you for lifting up Chelsea's very important information that caregiving was more of a community support historically and we have moved away from that. It is important to look at what has worked in the past and consider what strengths from that model we can leverage as we move forward.

As someone who was always offended when my male colleagues made comments to me about having a "mom brain" after my children were born, I so appreciate Chelsea's amazing book and this great interview that highlights the power of a mom brain. The book should be a required reading!

As the mom of four now, I believe that a "mom brain" is a powerful, focused asset! I agree that this is such an important book to clarify the misconceptions.
