Great piece and Lucy is an awesome name.

I do want to point out one thing - when it comes to pronunciation, I think it might be worth clarifying that this often means "how easy are things to pronounce when compared to white-coded names." Pronunciation is influenced by background and culture. Most of these studies compare "hard" names to pronounce with "easy" white-coded names.

Thank you for pointing that out!

it's so funny--My first one is named Paul which nobody is using these days so even though it's a common, old-fashioned name, it's not trendy right now.

The other one is James--and he's like one of three or four James' in his class. Oh well!

I bet that Paul will be coming back as all of the "old-fashioned" names are! Thank you for sharing your children's names!

my favorite girl name at the time was "Sasha" (shortened from Alexandra) which my mom told me everyone would use because of Sasha Obama. I have not been seeing any Sashas around I'm just saying. Someone take it!!

That is surprising that Sasha did not become popular. I like it too.

This was so much fun to read (also a little sad, disheartening, and hilarious)! It just reaffirms how many preconceived notions are either stacked for or against you even when you’re just a few days old and all based on a name.

I love the name Lucy and it’s lovely when the whole family rallies around it! Th

It was so much fun to research and write! Some of the information-particularly around names and places-- I would not have believed had I not read it in the research. I have also loved hearing everyone’s naming stories on Instagram this week. I would love to hear them here as well.

So fascinating that girls with more gender neutral names pursue higher level math and science classes. I hope this is true for nicknames... my daughter has a very feminine full name, but goes by a gender-neutral nickname....

That was another interesting ( and concerning ) piece of research I found!

This is all so fascinating, I can't wait to comb through some of the studies more on my own time. Also, I love that the other kids were given some input regarding the new baby's name, they did a great job!

There are a number of great studies linked in the newsletter. If you find others that are of interest, let me know.

The name-location connection is so surprising and funny! And Lucy is such a sweet name for a baby girl; so cute that your kids got onboard with little Lucy!

Thank you! I think sharing the baby's name with the siblings helps them to understand about the baby who will be joining the family!

My children's names are Thomas and Samantha so now I am trying to figure out where they might live or what they might do! Thomas could live in Thomasville and Samantha might live in San Antonio!

This post is so interesting! I have never heard of implicit egoism being talked about in that regard! It is very surprising to know that implicit egoism can extend to which state you decide to live in. Also, I hope that, in future years, names grow to be more celebrated and used less for profiling. It is indeed a very sad and real thing that has been happening in recent years. Brilliant post!
